Man Dead In Snowmobile Crash

Regional
by Catherine Thompson

A 57-year-old man is dead after his snowmobile crashed into a tree north of Barrie.

Police say he was riding on a marked trail on the 50/51 Sideroad in Oro-Medonte Township, near Highway 400,  when he hit a tree yesterday.

He was pronounced dead in the hospital.

Police say inexperience may have been factor in the crash.

An autopsy will be done today.

This is the third fatality involving snow machines in the OPP Central Region in less than 39 hours.

A Barrie teen was killed when his sled hit a tree on the outskirts of Barrie.

The 17 year old had been giving a stranded snowmobiler a lift.

The passenger was not badly hurt.
